Episode Thirty-Six - Fall Means Sweaters

Welcome to episode thirty-six of "Stitching Between Pages"! I hope you enjoy watching, and thank you for checking it out. Thank you for putting up with my unplanned summer break!

Please get in touch!

WIPs:
1. "Featherweight" cardigan, by Hannah Fettig. Knit in KnitPicks Alpaca Cloud in the "Beth" colorway. Knit on US6/4.0mm needles.
2. "Lush" cardigan, by Tin Can Knits. Knit in HazelKnits Lively DK in the "Jam Session" colorway and Loop Studio in the "Charcoal" colorway. Knit on US6/4.0mm needles and US3/3.25mm needles.

Pretty New Yarn:
West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4-Ply in the "Pheasant" colorway

Sewing!:
My next sewing project will be the Moss Skirt designed by Grainline Studio. I'll be sewing it out of one of the Cotton + Steel / Rifle Paper Co. collaboration fabrics. I realized I didn't mention the name of my local fabric shop -- it's Oak Fabrics, and they are lovely.

Book:
The Girl on the Train, by Paula Hawkins. (I also mentioned Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; I read it, but preferred Sharp Objects. Her third book is Dark Places, which I have not read. I also also mentioned Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie mysteries, which start with Case Histories, and which I loved.)

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. I am obsessed with The West Wing right now. I know political television dramas aren't everyone's cup of tea (and the US election is providing far too much political drama without any help at all), but if you haven't watched it, I highly recommend it.
2. The sweater pattern I was talking about is indeed called Wolf River. It's designed by Melissa Schaschwary and is available for $6 on Ravelry. Fluph Shop and Louise Scollay of Knit British hosted the #bigwiprip on Instagram, which inspired my frogging of my Campside shawl.
3. The yarn shop in Philadelphia that I visited last year and where I got the yarn that is now being knit into a Lush cardigan is indeed called Loop. It's a lovely shop! So is Looped Yarn Works in DC, and so is Loop in London.
4. If you're curious, the baby sweater I knit is the Ella Funt pattern (link to my project page, which links to the pattern). As I noted on Ravelry, and as a lot of others noted, the sweater runs BIG. I think the baby ended up wearing it when she was 3. Oops! (Also, in scrolling back through my projects, I realized I had totally forgotten about another baby cardigan -- the Striped Smock Top.)
5. Go check out Rifle Paper Co. if you are not familiar with them -- if you have have even a passing love of stationery, hang on to your wallet.

Episode Thirty-Four - Dress Weather

Welcome to episode thirty-four of "Stitching Between Pages"! I hope you enjoy watching, and thank you for checking it out. I apologize if you can hear any background noise; there's been work happening on the exterior face of my building for a couple of weeks now and at the end of the episode, the workmen were directly outside my window.

Knit in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the "Modern Fair Isle" colorway and Kismet Fiber Arts Soul in the "Lucky Penny" and "Juniper" colorways. Knit on US6/4.00mm 32" HiyaHiya Sharps circular.

Book:
All the Single Ladies: Unmarried Women and the Rise of an Independent Nation, by Mary Traister. If you're curious, you can check out her NPR interview.

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. If you're curious about my Milwaukee adventure last weekend... here's some information on the Joan of Arc Chapel at Marquette University. The website of the Milwaukee Art Museum is here. If you're curious about the museum's architect, Santiago Calatrava, here's his Wikipedia page with images of some of his designs.
2. The project bags that I made were made using the really great tutorial for drawstring bags over at In Color Order. I highly recommend it!
3. This podcast loves Mary Oliver! The quotation which I'm embroidering is from her poem "Invitation." The other line that I miserably misquoted is from her poem "The Summer Day": "Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?" Both poems are gorgeous, but I don't think I've ever read a Mary Oliver poem that I didn't love.

Book:
1. Birdsong, by Sebastian Faulks. I also mentioned Regeneration, by Pat Barker, which I previously discussed on the podcast - it's my favorite WWI novel. I am currently reading Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie mysteries: they are Case Histories, One Good Turn, When Will There Be Good News?, and Started Early, Took My Dog.

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm is SO GREAT. I have the Rose color.
2. I finally (successfully!) used Jeni's Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. Also, here's the Knitty tutorial for Judy's Magic Cast-On. Yay for toe-up socks.
3. During my little wandering monologue about what I should knit with my Blacker Yarns Cornish Tin (DK weight, two skeins), I mentioned the TinCanKnits Banff Hat and Kate Davies' Epistropheid. (Heid is the Scots word for "head.")
4. There was a beautiful memorial for the centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1. Here's the writeup in The Guardian. There's some information in this NPR article on the battle as well as the various commemorations that occurred on July 1, 2016 in memory of this horrific battle. For information on the Battle of the Somme, which lasted 141 days, this BBC site is very good.

Episode Thirty-Two - Better Late Than Never

Welcome to episode thirty-two of "Stitching Between Pages"! I hope you enjoy watching, and thank you for checking it out. Apologies for the very loud sirens at approximately 21 minutes and 33 minutes... the downside of living on a main drag in a city. I don't even really hear them anymore!

FOs:
1. Vanilla + Cable socks. Knit in Regia Nuance Color in colorway 04989. Knit on US1/2.25mm Knitter's Pride Karbonz DPNs.
2. "Fair Isle Flower Socks" by Candice DeWitt. Knit in Regia Premium Line Extra Twist Merino in colorway 09365 and Malabrigo Sock in the "Lettuce" colorway. Knit on US1/2.25mm KnitPro Zing DPNs.

2. "Three Color (not-cashmere) Shawl," using the 3 Color Cashmere Shawl pattern by Joji Locatelli. Knit in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the "Modern Fair Isle" colorway and Kismet Fiber Arts Soul in the "Lucky Penny" and "Juniper" colorways. Knit on US6/4.00mm 32" HiyaHiya Sharps circular.
3. Vanilla socks. Knit in KnitPicks Felici in the "Tea Party" colorway. Knit on US1/2.25mm KnitPro Zing DPNs.

Spinning:
I'm slowly working through my braid of Malabrigo Nube (100% merino) in the Piedras colorway. I'm about halfway done and I'm spinning on my Schacht Hi-Lo spindle as usual.

Pretty New Yarn!:
"Tico and the Golden Wings" on the Charlotte fingering base from Swatch This Fiber Arts.

Book:
Life After Life, by Kate Atkinson. (I also mentioned her detective novels featuring Jackson Brodie; the first one is called Case Histories.)

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. Printer's Row Lit Fest in the South Loop. If you're ever in Chicago on the appropriate June weekend, I highly recommend checking it out. It's the largest outdoor/free lit fest in the Midwest. If you're in Chicago during the last weekend of July, come check out the Newberry Library Book Fair -- another amazing event, billed as "Chicago's favorite used-book binge."
2. We're having another KAL! It's with the lovely Robyn and Merry of the Cherry Purls podcast. The Summer Colors KAL is running through 31 July, and the idea is to knit something using at least two different colorways of yarn (you can use more!). WIPs that are less than 50% done as of 1 June may be entered. There are chatter and FO threads in the Ravelry group, so come on over and let us know what you will be knitting. There's also an Instagram hashtag, which I keep forgetting to mention -- #summercolorskal. I also shared some of the lovely prizes we had donated by friends of the podcast on this episode -- two gorgeous skeins of yarn, one the "Goldfinch" colorway from West Yorkshire Spinners, and the other a beautiful skein in the "Wind in the Willows" colorway dyed by Swatch This Fiber Arts. I'll also be sewing up a little project bag as a prize for the FO thread and drawing for a pattern prize ($7USD or less) from the chatter thread.

Pretty New Yarn!:
Selbu Spinneri yarn from Norway

Book:
Ship Fever, by Andrea Barrett. I have another collection of her short stories, Servants of the Map, which I am hoping to read this summer.

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. Folks. Cold-brew iced coffee. SO GOOD. I always thought cold-brew was one of those overrated things that required lots of effort -- I think I got this idea because cold-brew coffee concentrate is really pricey at stores. I was wrong. Nothing could be easier. I put a little vanilla almond milk in mine; I like hot coffee black, but iced coffee with a little milk. Smitten Kitchen has instructions!
2. We're having another KAL! It's with the lovely Robyn and Merry of the Cherry Purls podcast. 1. "Waiting for Rain" shawl by Sylvia Bo Bilvia. Knit in Cedar House Yarns Sapling Sock in the "Fog" colorway and Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the "Candlewick" colorway. Knit on US6/4.00mm 32" HiyaHiya Sharps circular.
2. Spinning! Punis from Naturally Knitty in the "Crazy Like a Fox!" colorway. I ended up with about 110yds and just under 2oz.

WIPs:
1. Vanilla + Cable socks. Knit in Regia Nuance Color in colorway 04989. Knit on US1/2.25mm Knitter's Pride Karbonz DPNs. If you would like to replicate the cable, check out my Ravelry project page.
2. "Fair Isle Flower Socks" by Candice DeWitt. Knit in Regia Premium Line Extra Twist Merino in colorway 09365 and Malabrigo Sock in the "Lettuce" colorway. Knit on US1/2.25mm KnitPro Zing DPNs.
3. "Fine and Dandy Socks" by The Sweater Co. Knit in Camelot Dyeworks Galahad sock in the "Sunflower" colorway. Knit on US1/2.25mm HiyaHiya Sharps DPNs.

Spinning:
I began spinning my Malabrigo Nube fiber in the Piedras colorway. It is 100% merino. I'm spinning it on my Schacht Hi-Lo spindle as usual.

Books:
1. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh (I also mentioned Vile Bodies, which satirizes the "Bright Young Things" of 1920s London)
2. Love in a Cold Climate, by Nancy Mitford.

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. If any newer viewers are interested in the saga of the green & cream socks, you can view my project page here (I used cream for the heels and toes only, not the cuffs). I went through a false start with a pattern, but they appeared as a WIP in their vanilla form in Episode Seven (which is named after them, in fact!).
2. While I was knitting the Fair Isle Flower Socks, I was watching Peaky Blinders. It's available on Netflix in the US. It is an excellent show, though with swearing, violence, and other adult content it is not child-friendly. It takes place in Birmingham in the 1920s and follows the escapades of the Shelby family, who are in charge of the Peaky Blinders gang. The Peaky Blinders (so-called for the razor blades sewn into the peaks of their flat caps) were a real gang, but the show is only loosely based on them. Cillian Murphy is excellent as Tommy Shelby, though Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly really steals the show for me. It's kind of an anti-Downton Abbey, if you will.
2. We're having another KAL! It's with the lovely Robyn and Merry of the Cherry Purls podcast. The Summer Colors KAL will run from June 1 through July 31, and the idea is to knit something using at least two different colorways of yarn (you can use more!). WIPs that are less than 50% done may be entered. There will be a chatter thread in the Ravelry group starting today, so come on over and let us know what you will be knitting. There's also an Instagram hashtag, which I keep forgetting to mention -- #summercolorskal.

2. "Waiting for Rain" shawl by Sylvia Bo Bilvia. Knit in Cedar House Yarns Sapling Sock in the "Fog" colorway" and Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the "Candlewick" colorway. Knit on US6/4.00mm 32" HiyaHiya Sharps circular.

Spinning:
I am plying my punis from Naturally Knitty in the "Crazy Like a Fox!" colorway. The punis include Falkland, merino, Shetland, and targhee, and I have 2oz.

Next Up:
1. I am thinking of casting on a 3 Color Cashmere Shawl, designed by Joji Locatelli. I have a skein of madelinetosh tosh merino light in the "Modern Fair Isle" colorway, and two skeins of Kismet Fiber Arts Soul in the "Lucky Penny" and "Juniper" colorways.
2. My next spinning project will be a 4oz braid of Malabrigo Nube in the Piedras colorway.
3. I'm also considering several plans for a hap. I was right; they are from Shetland. There are some good images on Gudrun Johnston's website. It will probably take me a while to cast on, and I may wait until Kate Davies' new hap book is released.

Pretty New Yarn:
A very kind friend of the podcast gave me three skeins of yarn. Two are for YOU (as prizes in forthcoming KALs) and one is for me!
1. West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4-Ply in the "Goldfinch" colorway
2. Kirby Wirby Yarns Soft & Squishy in the "KW Rainbow" colorway
3. Fibernymph Dye Works Bounce in the "Double Tap" colorway

Book:
Dancer, by Colum McCann. (I also mentioned Let the Great World Spin, also by Colum McCann. I've also read and enjoyed another of his novels, TransAtlantic.)

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. I was wearing my Beltane shawl, which was the Kelbourne Woolens MKAL in 2014.
More details will be forthcoming, but pick your patterns and yarn!

Pretty New Yarn (& Stuff)!:
1. An absolutely amazing package from a kind and extremely generous viewer/friend of the podcast, Michele.

Book:
The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger.

In the context of re-reading books, I mentioned the Harry Potter series and Tamora Pierce's Tortall novels, which are several quartets/series of young adult fantasy with awesome lady characters. If you aren't familiar, start with the Alanna quartet (beginning with Alanna: The First Adventure) -- they are my favorite (closely followed by the quartet about Daine).

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. I mentioned the special episode of The Knitting Expat/Little Bobbins' Curious Handmade Country House retreat, which was such a treat! Mina and Dani were joined at the end by Helen Stewart of Curious Handmade and Paula Emons-Fuessle of the Knitting Pipeline (I can't believe I forgot Paula's name! I even knit one of her patterns recently).
2. I mentioned the Fine & Dandy sock pattern by The Sweater Co. Currently, all proceeds from this sock pattern are going to UNICEF.
3. The Van Gogh Bedroom exhibit at the Art Institute! I was right - the paintings are of Van Gogh's room in Arles.
4. I was wearing my Red Robin shawl (link to my Ravelry page) by Helen Stewart of Curious Handmade.
5. If you are ever in Chicago the last weekend of July, I recommend saving space in your luggage and checking out the Newberry Library's used book sale! It's a Friday/Saturday/Sunday event, most books are $2 or less, and people line up outside waiting for the doors to open. It's a real Chicago event. Plus, the Newberry is a gorgeous building and independent research libraries are super great.

FOs:
1. "Conversationalist" hat no. 2, by The Plucky Knitter. Knit in KnitPicks City Tweed HW/Aran in the "Orca," "Snowshoe," and "Lemon Curd" colorways. Knit on US5/3.75mm and US7/4.5mm KnitPicks Caspian 16" circulars. In the end, I kept the second hat I knit (with Snowshoe as the ribbing/first color and Orca as the pom-pom). It bore up very well to the -25°F (approximately -31°C for my Centigrade friends) windchill.

WIPs:
1. "Upstairs Downstairs" cowl in the smallest size, by Paula Emons-Fuessle of the Knitting Pipeline podcast. Knit in Mrs. Crosby Hatbox sport-weight in the "French Chambray" colorway. Knit on US7/4.5mm KnitPicks Caspian 16" circular.

Spinning:
1. After a while away, I finally finished the third ounce of my YarnRescue Polwarth braid in the "Eggplant" colorway. I'm spinning it on my Schacht Hi-Lo spindle.

Pretty New Yarn!:
1. Two skeins of MadelineTosh Tosh Merino Light in the "Modern Fair Isle" colorway.
2. Freia Fine Handpaints fingering weight in the "South Beach" gradient colorway. AHHHH!

Book:
1. Parrot and Olivier in America, by Peter Carey.
2. I mentioned in passing Ron Chernow's biography of Alexander Hamilton.

Other Miscellaneous Mentions:
1. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is fantastic. It's a group of glacial lakes on the Minnesota/Canada border (and the BWCAW in the US abuts Canada's Quetico Provincial Park and Voyageurs National Park). And yes, I have carried both a 50lb backpack and a 60lb canoe over quarter- to half-mile portages. If you are curious, here is the website of Sawbill Canoe Outfitters, where my mug is from and the canoe outfitters that my group used (and has used for years).
2. I was wearing my Strand Hill Cardigan (link to my Ravelry project page). Although the sleeves look a bit skewed on the video, they are not that way in real life!
3. Hamilton the musical. Here's their official website. The original cast recording is available as a CD and for streaming on Spotify. The musical, by Lin-Manuel Miranda (the link goes to his bio on the MacArthur Foundation website, because he received a MacArthur Grant this year), is based on the biography by Ron Chernow. And here are the super-helpful annotated lyrics to the full cast recording.
4. If you're in Chicago, the Shedd Aquarium is well worth a visit. I greatly enjoyed visiting with a friend after many years since my previous visit.
5. I am so, so excited to be playing Dan Jones of the Bakery Bears podcast in their knitting quiz show, "Knit or Forfeit," this spring! Our specialist topic will be -- what else?! -- history. Coming to the Bakery Bears podcast sometime this spring.
