There's some information in this NPR article on the battle as well as the various commemorations that occurred on July 1, 2016 in memory of this horrific battle. For information on the Battle of the Somme, which lasted 141 days, this BBC site is very good.

1. Printer's Row Lit Fest in the South Loop. If you're ever in Chicago on the appropriate June weekend, I highly recommend checking it out. It's the largest outdoor/free lit fest in the Midwest. If you're in Chicago during the last weekend of July, come check out the Newberry Library Book Fair -- another amazing event, billed as "Chicago's favorite used-book binge."
2. We're having another KAL! It's with the lovely Robyn and Merry of the Cherry Purls podcast. 1. Folks. Cold-brew iced coffee. SO GOOD. I always thought cold-brew was one of those overrated things that required lots of effort -- I think I got this idea because cold-brew coffee concentrate is really pricey at stores. I was wrong. Nothing could be easier. I put a little vanilla almond milk in mine; I like hot coffee black, but iced coffee with a little milk. Smitten Kitchen has instructions!

1. If any newer viewers are interested in the saga of the green & cream socks, you can view my project page here (I used cream for the heels and toes only, not the cuffs). I went through a false start with a pattern, but they appeared as a WIP in their vanilla form in Episode Seven (which is named after them, in fact!).

2. While I was knitting the Fair Isle Flower Socks, I was watching Peaky Blinders. It's available on Netflix in the US. It is an excellent show, though with swearing, violence, and other adult content it is not child-friendly. It takes place in Birmingham in the 1920s and follows the escapades of the Shelby family, who are in charge of the Peaky Blinders gang. The Peaky Blinders (so-called for the razor blades sewn into the peaks of their flat caps) were a real gang, but the show is only loosely based on them. Cillian Murphy is excellent as Tommy Shelby, though Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly really steals the show for me. It's kind of an anti-Downton Abbey, if you will.

3. I'm also considering several plans for a hap. I was right; they are from Shetland. There are some good images on Gudrun Johnston's website. It will probably take me a while to cast on, and I may wait until Kate Davies' new hap book is released.

In the context of re-reading books, I mentioned the Harry Potter series and Tamora Pierce's Tortall novels, which are several quartets/series of young adult fantasy with awesome lady characters. If you aren't familiar, start with the Alanna quartet (beginning with Alanna: The First Adventure) -- they are my favorite (closely followed by the quartet about Daine).

Plus, the Newberry is a gorgeous building and independent research libraries are super great.
